How professional photography influences perceptions of business leadership
Today I’m going to tell you something you might already know, but which you’ve perhaps never really stopped to think about.
- You’re looking for information about someone important in your industry. A CEO, an executive, someone who could be a good contact or a potential partner. And you do what we all do: you visit their website, their LinkedIn profile, or something similar. And it’s quite likely that what you’ll see is a photo from seven years ago. Or worse, a poorly lit selfie. Or, why not, a pixelated image that looks like it’s been taken from an old ID card. Believe me, this happens more often than you think.
- What did you think at that moment? Let’s be honest. Even if you don’t want to, even if you try to be objective, you might wonder whether that person is really where they say they are. Whether they really lead what they claim to lead. Whether you can trust someone who hasn’t spent even five minutes updating their profile photo. Or the brand imagery for their business. And if you think that about others, others think it about you.
- Your professional photo isn’t just a photo. It’s the first thing your potential clients see before reading a single line about you. It’s your digital handshake. Your first impression. And you know there are no second chances for first impressions.
- And this has nothing to do with being photogenic or not. It’s about consistency. About paying attention to detail, about showing that if you look after your image, you also look after your work, your team and your projects.
- At Barcelona Photographer, we’ve been working for years with companies that share this way of thinking. People who know that their professional portrait isn’t vanity, it’s strategy. And today, as a

The relationship between personal image and professional credibility
A question. Have you ever had to choose between two professionals offering similar services? It might have been a solicitor, a consultant, a coach… it doesn’t matter. Both had good reviews. However, one had a polished professional image and the other didn’t quite.
Who did you choose? If your answer is the first one, that’s only natural. And it’s not about being superficial. It’s just that your brain is programmed to make quick decisions based on visual cues. And one of the most powerful cues is how the person you’re going to trust presents themselves visually.
In the world of business leadership, this is multiplied a thousandfold. Because when you lead a company, a team, or a project, people need to feel they can trust you. And that trust starts with the visual.
Your professional portrait appears on LinkedIn, on your website, in press releases when you’re mentioned, and in your company’s internal presentations. Whenever someone needs to put a face to your name, that photo is there. And in those three seconds it takes someone to look at it, they’re forming an opinion of you.
Imagine someone visits your profile and sees a professional, well-presented, authentic photograph. An image where you look just as you are, but at your best. Where your gaze says, ‘Trust me, I know what I’m doing’. Where your posture conveys confidence without arrogance. That person will think, ‘This person takes what they do seriously’.
And here’s the key fact. LinkedIn profiles with professional photos receive 14 times more visits than those without a photo or with low-quality images. And they receive, on average, 36 times more messages. That’s what happens when you take care of your digital presence.
Cases where a portrait has enhanced an executive’s authority
Here are three real-life stories of professionals who came to our studio. All three faced very similar issues: their image didn’t reflect how far they’d come in their careers.
The CEO who hadn’t updated his profile picture for 10 years
A few months ago, the CEO of a tech company got in touch with us. He was finalising a major investment round and had been asked to update the photos of the management team. His photo was almost ten years old, from when they first started out. They now had 40 employees and three offices. But his profile picture was still the same as it had been in 2016.
We held the shoot at his current office. And at last he had up-to-date photographs that reflected his current situation.
The consultant who stopped coming across as cold
Ana, a human resources consultant, had a problem: people perceived her as being too formal. In person, she was warm and empathetic, but her photo didn’t convey that. Technically, it was perfect, but emotionally, it felt empty.
For her shoot, we chose a quiet café in the Eixample district. And as a result, she got the photographs that finally conveyed what she wanted to convey.
The manager who needed to win over his team
An operations manager at a family-run business, who was the first manager to be recruited from outside the company. He needed to build trust within his team.
We held the photo shoot at the factory itself. With the team gathered around and the machinery in the background. The result was a series of photographs in which he looked – and felt – like part of the company.
Tips for conveying confidence and approachability in executive portraits
If you’re thinking about booking a professional photo shoot, let’s look at what you need to do to make sure it goes well. These aren’t just some dodgy marketing gimmicks. They’re things we’ve learnt from photographing hundreds of business leaders. Tips that actually work.
Dress as you would on your best day at work
If you don’t feel comfortable, it will show. Avoid bold patterns; plain colours work best because the focus is on your eyes.
Choose a place where you feel completely at ease
Your office? An outdoor space? It all depends on what you want to convey. We usually recommend holding the sessions in your own environment. When you’re in your element, you relax. And the photos turn out much better.
A smile, but only if it’s genuine
There’s no need to force a smile. If you tend to have a more serious demeanour, there’s nothing wrong with appearing with a neutral expression. Many of the best executive portraits convey presence, not a smile.
If your personal brand is about approachability, then yes, a smile can be perfect. But it has to be genuine.
Your gaze is everything
Your gaze is the only thing that really matters in an executive portrait. It needs to convey confidence without arrogance. Approachability without weakness. Self-assurance whilst remaining human.
You already have that look. It’s the one you have when you talk about your project, when you explain something you’re passionate about. Our job as personal branding photographers is to capture it. To do that, during the session we’ll chat with you, ask you questions, and help you forget the camera.
Trust the photographer behind the camera
At Barcelona Photographer, we don’t just press a button. We direct the shoot. Our job is to make you feel at ease and bring out the best in you.
If we ask you to move, give it a go. If we suggest a different pose, give it a try. From the other side of the camera, we see things you don’t.
Come in feeling relaxed (or try to be)
Try to book the session for a time of day when you’re feeling calm. Mid-morning or early afternoon usually work well. Before you start, take five minutes. Breathe. Think about what you want to say.
Use your new image everywhere
On LinkedIn, on your website, on social media, in corporate materials, in presentations, in email signatures… Wherever people look for you, they should see that same professional image.
